What's In a Name?
“All right,” Carol answered, feeling defeated, and useless - unable to do anything but wait.
“You promise you will call me?” she asked checking the nurse’s name badge.

THE STORY OF A LIFE
I have always had a thing about names.
A name is a powerful thing. It is one of the very first things your parents give you and usually one of the first things you share with someone new. And even though we know we shouldn’t, we all make assumptions about people based on their names. Think about a Cecil or Hugh, Beryl or Milly. Or what about all the poor Karens?
When I was expecting our second child, we did what every parent does and tried lots of different names on for size. We studied the credits after our favourite TV shows for inspiration and pulled names from books we had read or from an overheard conversation.
My husband used to joke that if the baby was a girl we should call her Chloe Zoey Moonchild. Where he pulled that from, I have no idea, but he had suggested Eugene Wolfgang for our son!
For months we played the name game and found it hard to agree. In the end we decided if it was a girl I would choose, a boy he could.
When our daughter arrived pink and healthy, she was given a different name, which we both loved. But Chloe Zoey Moonchild has always stuck with me.
A name can be a blessing or a curse.
My nurse called Moonchild, is a nod to the beauty and power of embracing your name. I loved the sound of it and the limitless possibilities of who she could be.
I was writing The Story of Life, I knew that I had found my Moonchild, it wasn’t the right name When for our little girl, but it was perfect for my nurse.
